Gold Bookshelf: Ikea Hack
Like every adorable office pinned to my Pinterest board, I have been longing for some gold bookshelves to frame the window behind my desk. The problem is: they were a lot more than I wanted to pay. Even with every promo code and discount applied, I just couldn’t swing $400 for 2 bookshelves. (We’re on a budget people!)
So, I figured I could just make my own — BEST DECISION EVER. Not only were these bookshelves the simple design I was searching for, but I was also able to customize it to add accent shelves! (Hang with me, I’ll get there!) They definitely look like they are worth what I COULD have paid.. but better! Let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Ikea VITTSJÖ Bookshelf (Black or White)
First, assemble the Ikea bookshelves according to the instructions. (I put them together while watching Netflix and it was a breeze.) Set the shelves (both the glass & the top/bottom shelves) aside for safe keeping while we spray paint the structure.
Wipe the bookshelves down to make sure there is no cardboard residue or styrofoam, and prepare your area to spray paint. I used the Rustoleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint (pictured below), but you can choose whatever color or finish you’d like.
Spray the bookshelves, applying 2 coats and cover the underneath. Make sure not to miss any spots, because the glass shelves will expose any unfinished areas! While the bookshelves are drying, you’re going to work on your accent shelves.
I used adhesive drawer liner from Walmart that was only $6. They have lots of options, but I chose the Grey Marble because it best fit my office vibe. Apply the adhesive to the top and bottom shelves. They are made of plastic, and the adhesive is really forgiving so just go for it! If you have a wrinkle or air pocket, you can pull it off and re-apply until you’re satisfied. Here is the finished product of what mine looks like up-close:
Now, you’re ready to put the shelves in and set it up! I’m absolutely in love with these shelves, and the glam they add to my office is perfect. I can’t wait to see your finished projects! xo
